Johor Bahru is not a place that you would find on many tourists' maps. J.B., as it is popularly known, is not the typical hangout with the glitz and glamour that you may associate Singapore or Kuala Lumpur with.

However, located in the state of Johor in the southern part of Malaysia, Johor Bahru is Malaysia's second largest city and an important industrial, tourism and commercial hub.

Johor Bahru is a picturesque and idyllic paradise with a laid back lifestyle and still retains its old world charm.


Johor Bahru is located on the Straits of Johor. It is connected by a well known and highly popular causeway which links it with Singapore by a six-laned road and a railway line.

The "Second Link" is however far more popular and highly recommended if you would rather enjoy the comforts of a luxury bus or have you own rental limousine drive you across in royal splendor.

And speaking of royal splendor, no visit to the Johor Bahru is ever complete without a visit to the Royal Museum. Set up barely 15 years ago by the present Malay King, the museum is home to a dazzling collection of the treasures of the Royal Family.

In addition to an extensive art collection, the museum displays the ceremonial regalia, personal memorabilia, furniture, objets d'arts, and cultural artifacts accumulated by the Royal Family over the course of its reign.

The adventurous can take a small trip just outside Johor Bahru and find themselves in quaint little Malay villages inhabited by friendly villagers. Spend a day with them to discover typical Malay hospitality.

The state of Johore is one of the most developed in Malaysia. Its economy relies on agriculture with rubber, oil palm, pineapple and pepper being its most prevalent crops. Timber is also harvested in large amounts in Johor and wood-based manufacturing is another money making industry. Johor is also the economic hinterland of Singapore.

There is also a large bauxite mining industry in the state. Export has become big business in Johor and the port at Pasir Gudang was built to cope with the expanding international trade. In addition to agriculture, tourism also plays a large part in Johor's successful economy.

Johor enjoys a rich mix of culture which is evident by the magnificent mosques, superb temples and classic churches that can be found in Johor Bahru. This eclectic blend also contributes to a marvellous culinary melting pot.

There are dishes from a wide variety of ethnic origins and Johor Bahru has something for everyone. You can sample delicacies from all over the region and those with Malay or Chinese influence, all over Johor Bahru.

Geography
Johor Bahru is located at 1o29' N 103o44' E. The total area of the city is 185 sq. Km. The city is situated at the Straits of Johor which seperates Malaysia from Singapore.

Johor Bahru occupies extensive coastal area and number of river systems.

History
Johor Bahru was founded by Temenggung Daeng Ibrahim in 1855. He was the father of Sultan Abu Bakar, one of the best-remembered of all Malay Sultans. Initially it was a small fishing village named Tanjung Puteri and the Sultan renamed it to Johor Bahru when he proclaimed it the capital of his kingdom in 1866.

The Sultan took a great interest to plan and lay out the royal city of Johor Bahru. Today the name of the Sultan and other marks can be seen in the city, like the Royal Abu Bakar Museum and the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque, which are named after him.

Nowadays, a number of Singaporeans are visiting Johor Bahru for commercial and recreational purposes.

Transportation
To arrive at Johor Bahru from outside Malaysia, you can opt to come by Air and land here directly. Regular flights are there from other countries and major cities of Malaysia, so it is fairly comfortable to arrive in Johor Bahru. However, train and taxi facilities are also available to arrive here form other cities of Malaysia.

When you reach J.B., you can choose taxis to visit the places of interest as taxis are the cheapest and best mode of journeying through Johor Bahru.

There are express buses, which offer a comfortable journey in reasonable fares, and you can also choose these buses to roam around. If you come from Singapore, then there are special train services for you and you can opt for that! Singapore is also connected to Malaysia through a bridge!

Places of Interest
Johor Bahru offers number of places to visit and you perhaps would find yourself exhausted to visit these places. Here are some of them:

State Secretariat Building
This building was built in 1940 and is located at a hill. This is a symbol of progressive and modern Johor Bahru. A real treat to watch!

Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque
This mosque is considered as one of the most beautiful mosques in Malaysia. This was built in the memory and after the death of Sultan and was completed in 1900.

The great Palace and the royal Abu Bakar Museum
The foundation stone of this building was laid by the Sultan himself in 1864. It is one of the oldest buildings in Johor Bahru and a number of people visit this place regularly.

Festivals of Johor Bahru
There are also hundreds of religious festivals throughout the year which explode in a mixture of colour and music. These festivals emphasise the rich history of Johor State and are an essential part of religious life in the area.

Almost all the festivals of Johor Bahru are religious based and are inspired with the divine invocation. Festival Kesenian Johor, Bulan Fiesta Makanan & Buah-Buahan Peringkat Negeri, Hari Peladang, Penternak dan Nelayan Negeri Johor, Tari Negeri Johor are to name a few of them!
